Special Issue on Strategies and applications in Natural Hazard Research Using Historical Data: Preface

M. Lang

Résumé

A yearly session adressing the link between historical data and natural hazard and risk assessments is organized within the General Assembly of the European Geophysical Society since 1999. A special issue contains a selection of presentations given to the session NH4 "The use of historical data in natural hazard assessment", organized within the 25th assembly of the EGS in Nice on 25 April 2000. The session was organized in three sub-sessions : earthquakes, floods and landslides. A total of 32 oral communications and poster were presented, from which six are included in this special volume. The presented set of papers focuses on floods and landslides, with the following topics: morphological aspects of floods in the Tagus basin, influence of stage discharge relationship on the annual maximum discharge statistics, stationnarity of nine long monthly rainfall series in Spain, review of scientific methods using documentary sources of geological indicators, radiocarbon datations of lateglacial and Holocene landslides in northern Italy, inventory of landslides and debris flows in Italy from documentary sources.
